October 16, 2025
Our beloved Tinka Hale Barrett, 88, of Herndon Virginia, entered eternal rest on October 16, 2025. She was born on June 14, 1937, in Phoebus, Virginia to the late Lillian and Ernest Hale. Tinka’s name at birth was Ernestine Frances Hale. She was so tiny and skinny her brothers thought she looked like a Tinkertoy. Soon everyone called her Tinka, and it stuck.
A graduate of Hampton High School, Tinka dedicated her life to her family and her community. She married Richard Barrett, on October 4, 1958. Together, they raised 2 daughters and built a home filled with laughter and unconditional love.
Tinka’s first job was as a secretary for the Continental Army Command at Fort Monroe where she met her husband, Richard. She continued her government service at the Pentagon after moving to Herndon.
For 30 years she worked for the Fairfax County School system, where she was known for her dedication, beautiful smile and sense of humor.
After retiring in 2011, she continued volunteering and giving back to the community with the Herndon Woman’s Club. Tinka joined the Women’s Club first in Hampton and continued her membership with the Herndon Club where she held the record for longest service of over 70 years.
Tinka was a member of the Herndon United Methodist Church. She served as secretary to the pastor for many years. She regularly attended services and meetings of the Top of the Hill group. Her kindness and strength were an inspiration to all who knew her.
This past year, Tinka lived at the Kensington in Reston where she met new friends and enjoyed many new adventures.
Tinka’s greatest joy was her family. She was happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Her home was the center of family gatherings. She is survived by her daughters, Traci Barrett Irwin (Dan) and Kelliann Barrett Miller (Dale), her grandchildren, Maggie Irwin, Will Irwin, and Hannamae Miller.
A memorial service will be held on October 30th at 2:00 at Herndon United Methodist Church, 701 Bennett St, Herndon, VA 20170. All are welcome to join family and friends for a reception in the church hall after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to Herndon Woman’s Club, a 501c charitable organization. Donations can be sent to HWC, PO Box 231 c/o Treasurer, Herndon VA 20172.
