PROCLAMATION WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY DECEMBER 16, 2023 In 2007, the national Wreaths Across America program was founded as an expansion of the Worcester Wreaths program at Arlington National Cemetery. The program’s mission is to “Remember the Fallen, Honor Those Who Serve, and Teach Our Children the Value of Freedom” with the laying of wreaths on the graves of our fallen heroes on the second or third Saturday of December each year.
In 2014, Wreaths Across America was brought to the Town of Herndon’s Chestnut Grove Cemetery by the Herndon Woman’s club with a simple wreath laying ceremony- a wreath for each of our Armed Forces and a wreath to honor POW/MIAs. While at the start, few veterans were identified in the cemetery records. Through the tireless work of the Herndon Woman’s Club, all veterans have been identified, and this year, 958 veterans will be honored. This year marks the 10th Wreaths Across America program at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, and through the leadership and dedication of the Herndon Woman’s Club, the annual ceremony has expanded to include placing wreaths at the graves of all our veterans. The Herndon Woman’s Club contributes over 500 volunteer hours to this event, including fundraising, placement and removal of wreaths, and partnering with other community organization to make this an event that truly brings the community together to honor our veterans. Wreaths Across America serves as a key reminder of how we, as citizens, owe a deep debt of gratitude to all who served, are serving, and will serve in our Nation’s Armed forces. Therefore, the Mayor of the Town of Herndon, together with the Herndon Town Council hereby proclaims December 16, 2023 as Wreaths Across America Day in the Town of Herndon, and urges the community to join the Herndon Woman’s Club at the 10th annual ceremony at Chestnut Grove Cemetery to remember and honor our veterans. Further, residents are encouraged to join with communities across the country in supporting wreaths Across America this year and every year on the second or third Saturday of December.
