Programs and Community Service
The non-profit Herndon Woman’s Club spends countless volunteer hours to help support and enrich our community. Below are just some examples of our programs and community service projects.
The Herndon Woman's Club works with Wreaths Across America to honor our veterans who are laid to rest at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. In early December, we remember the fallen, the prisoners of war, the missing in action and honor those who have served and are serving this great nation with a short ceremony. After the ceremony, volunteers then place wreaths on the nearly 750 veterans' graves that have been identified in the cemetery. This project is supported by many individuals and organizations within the community, including the Boy Scouts who provide a Color Guard for the ceremony, friends and neighbors who come out to help lay wreaths, and the Herndon Fortnightly Club which hosts a reception following the event.
Snack Pack Project
The Herndon Woman's Club packs 1-gallon resealable bags with easy to prepare food to be distributed to local elementary school students who may not have enough food at home on the weekends. Members plan for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners and 2 snacks to be included in each bag. This year, the club supplied Clearview Elementary with 240 snack packs - enough to provide three weekends of food for the 80 students in need.
Artemis House Angel Tree
Artemis House is Fairfax County’s only emergency shelter for families and individuals fleeing domestic and sexual violence and human trafficking. Artemis House provides crisis intervention and temporary housing in apartment-style units in an undisclosed “safe-house.” The Herndon Woman's Club sets up Christmas trees with paper angels representing the families and single women from the shelter. Members select angels from the tree and donate gifts to help these individuals who are fleeing domestic violence.
Beautification and Cleanup
The Herndon Woman's Club organized a project to cleanup the intersection of Herndon Parkway and Van Buren Street. The club worked with the Town to have the undergrowth cut, and leaves, trash and other debris removed from the area. In the spring, the club plans to partner with the Town of Herndon to plant some small trees and bushes to beautify the area. In the fall, the club will provide bulbs to be planted in the area.
The club also continues its project to beautify the Gulf War Memorial along Route 606/Sterling Road. The club purchased nearly 1,000 daffodil bulbs that were planted along the Gulf War Memorial by the Town of Herndon, as well as two new wreaths to be placed at this memorial for the holidays.
Scholarships for Local Students
Four to five thousand dollars are budgeted each year to assist two Herndon High School seniors with college tuition. The criteria for the Herndon Woman’s Club Scholarship of $2,000 - $3,000 is that the recipient be a good all around student with an average scholastic record, who has a middle financial need, and is not receiving multiple other scholarships and awards. The second scholarship for $1,000 - $2,000 is awarded to the Senior Girl Athlete of the Year.
Herndon Woman’s Club members donate their time all four days of the Herndon Festival to the Town of Herndon. Club members provide coverage at the Town of Herndon souvenir booth selling festival t-shirts, sweatshirts, polo shirts and hats. We also hand out festival information brochures. It's a great way to volunteer for the Town while enjoying the festival atmosphere and greeting friends and neighbors as they walk by.
Activities with Seniors
The Herndon Woman's Club coordinated a BINGO event with our local Senior Center in Herndon. The club solicited and purchased prizes such as grocery gift cards, toiletry items and more. Members took turns calling the game and handing out prizes to the happy seniors, and enjoyed the opportunity to socialize with them as well.
The club also coordinated an Ice Cream Social for another of our local senior housing complexes – Arbor Terrace. Club members acted as waitresses and brought each attendee an ice cream sundae. Later, we were able to entertain them with a local Barber Shop Quartette. We had a raffle and lucky winners received $25 gift cards that we had purchased from area stores.
holiday homes tour of herndon
The annual Holiday Homes Tour of Herndon is held on the first Saturday of December every year. The Town of Herndon's Cultivating Community Initiative sponsors this event that provides the opportunity to tour historic homes in Herndon while they are beautifully decorated for the holidays. Five homes are selected to be on the tour, and each year Herndon Woman's Club members volunteer to serve as docents at one of the homes.
