December is often the time people reach out to friends and families and share highlights of personal events during the past year. Holiday updates may include travel to various locations, special events, visiting friends or relatives, accomplishments for the year and more.
January began a new year – 2018. The winter weather has been a topic of conversation for many people. For now, it would be appropriate to give a “shout out” to THANK the
community who provided support to the Herndon Woman’s Club in 2017. A second “shout out” goes to the Herndon Woman’s Club (HWC) members for their time spent volunteering to support the local community as well as several fund raising events during 2017.
Last year you may have noticed HWC members volunteering to sell T-shirts at the Herndon Festival, working at the Chamber’s Friday Night Live!, taking charge of the Herndon Labor Day Festival, hosting the Annual Fashion Show fundraiser, greeting guests on the Herndon Holiday Homes Tour, marching in the Herndon Homecoming Parade with their specially designed and built float to represent Wreaths Across America followed by the National Day of Remembrance Ceremony at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in December to honor the 790 veterans laid to rest.
Members also volunteered to work at the Closet, worked for LINK, held clothing and diaper drives, participated in MS Walk in Reston, elementary school reading book club, collected items for hypothermia project, collected supplies for recycling and used medical items for use by medical missionaries. Small donations were also made to various groups during the year, some in conjunction with fund raisers. (Arts Herndon, Camp Easter Seal, HOBY, UNICEF, Shot for Life, HEIFER Foundation, Herndon HS and Hugh O’Bryan Youth Leadership Scholarship, Caring Angel’s Luke’s Wings.)
Herndon Woman’s Club Members will be continuing some of these projects this year and are looking for more ways to support and become involved with the local community where we live and/or work and play.
